US auto major Ford’s Chennai plant recently reached a milestone by producing its one millionth vehicle and engine. One of the most successful models—EcoSport—was the millionth vehicle to roll off the Chennai assembly line.
Ford India at its Chennai facility has reached another milestone by producing one millionth car as well as one millionth engine. This achievement has been earned in over 16 years since the plant was back on track in the year 1999. Ford EcoSport is the one millionth vehicle to be rolled out from this facility. The Chennai situated plant is spread over 350 acres of land and produces Fiesta, Endeavour and EcoSport. The plant also houses engine assembly unit that was started in the year 2008. Company’s engine production unit builds diesel and petrol motors at the same time. Chennai plant becomes the only American powerhouse that can produce around 2 lakh cars and 3.4 lakh engines every year.
Ford, other than the Chennai plant also started its new manufacturing unit at Sanand located at Gujarat. The new plant majorly works on engines while the two Aspire sedan and Figo are also manufactured at the same place. Thanks to these two facilities in the country that Ford is able to export a large number of vehicles as well engines to over 40 different countries including Middle-East, Africa, Europe and ASEAN countries.
Spread over 350 acres, the integrated Chennai complex also houses an engine assembly plant that started commercial operations in 2008. The plant produces EcoSport, Fiesta and Endeavour. The facility has an installed capacity to assemble up to 2,00,000 vehicles and 3,40,000 engines a year.
The company has implemented several environment-friendly practices at the plant and it is one of five zero-landfill facilities in the Asia Pacific region.
This ensures that the entire hazardous waste generated at the plant is either recycled or is co-processed by the allied cement industries.
Apart from meeting the local demand, the quality vehicles and engines made here are exported to more than 40 markets across the globe.
